Ad Budget Automation With External Signals: Why Weather Triggers Are Still a Spreadsheet Job
The oddly specific problem
People just don't buy secateurs in the drizzle, and almost nobody has automated the obvious consequence.
Ad budget automation with external signals is one of those ideas that sounds solved and isn't. Somewhere in the UK, an agency manages Google Ads for a garden brand. They noticed something that should be obvious but rarely gets acted on: when it rains, sales roughly halve. Not because of bad traffic, not because of a broken landing page, not because of a competitor. People just don't buy secateurs in the drizzle.
So they built a rule. Sunny forecast, budgets go up 40 percent. Rain forecast, budgets come down 20 percent. To make this work they pipe weather forecasts into BigQuery next to their ads data and let the numbers argue with each other. Without that rule, they were paying full price for clicks that were never going to convert.
Then they went looking for other people doing the same thing, and started listing the signals they'd love to wire in next: FX rates for cross-border campaigns, school holidays for family products, fixture lists for sports brands, payday timing for cheap impulse buys. The list is good. The tooling is a shrug.
Meanwhile the DIY path looks like this: get lat/long coordinates, open an OpenWeather API account, set up a Google Sheet to hold state, write and deploy a JavaScript Google Ads Script, then maintain it forever. Four steps and a maintenance burden.
Wait, is this actually a problem?
Partly. The workflow is real and the underlying logic is sound. Seven of the ten highest-spending industries on Google Ads have some weather exposure (insurance, retail, travel top the list), and the weather-driven swing in UK clothing alone has been put at around £800 million.

The broader shift is better evidenced. Practitioners in r/PPC keep saying the same thing: the job of clicking around inside the ad interface has largely evaporated, and the value has moved off-platform, into offers, margins, landing pages and data plumbing. One person put it memorably: every company claims to be data-driven right up until you ask them to connect Salesforce to Google Ads, at which point everyone is suddenly very busy. External signals fit that pattern exactly. Feeding an outside variable into a budget rule is the kind of work that still pays.
What's much thinner is evidence anyone will pay a subscription for it. The multi-signal wishlist (FX, holidays, fixtures, payday) comes from one Reddit post. That is a person with good instincts, not a validated product category.

If you have this problem right now
The read is straightforward. Weather-only, non-technical, one or two sensitive clients: WeatherAds.io, and it will be cheaper than your dev's afternoon. Already on Optmyzr: write the script, keep it in one place, don't add a vendor. Enterprise spend with inventory and custom feeds in play: Skai already does this and you can probably afford it. Anything eccentric (fixture lists, payday cycles), you are building it yourself with Ads Scripts, and it will take less time than the procurement conversation would have.
So why isn't this a slam dunk?
We looked at building the missing middle: a no-code, multi-signal, agency-priced tool. Then we stepped back, for five reasons that compound.
WeatherAds.io's existence is an incumbent signal, not a gap signal. It has been selling this at $99 a month for years, owns the relevant search terms, and publishes polished content on the topic. And yet practitioners still post "is anyone doing this?" threads. The most likely explanation is not that nobody noticed. It's that the market is small.
The mid-market gap has persisted for a reason. Skai covers full multi-signal automation at enterprise pricing. The dossier framing was "priced out of reach." The better framing is that the only buyers who need full multi-signal automation are enterprise advertisers, and they already have somewhere to go. Agencies with the sophistication to want FX-driven budget rules also tend to have someone who can write forty lines of JavaScript.
The DIY alternative is cheap and good enough. Four steps, free APIs, one afternoon. That prices the addressable market down to agencies with zero technical capacity, which is also the segment with the smallest budgets and the loosest grip on their own clients.
No distribution wedge, and no moat to defend if you found one. SEO for these keywords is taken. Community posts create awareness, not conversions. Cold outreach to a 2 to 15 person agency that already pays for Optmyzr, reporting and Slack has a brutal response rate. Add realistic CAC of $800 to $1,500 against $149 to $299 ARPU, then add churn that is structurally tied to agency client churn (20 to 40 percent a year is normal), and payback lands around month seven on customers who leave in month four.
The 99 percent gross margin on a cron job with a UI is a vanity number.
There's also no engagement loop. You configure the garden client's rain rule and never log in again until it breaks, at which point you blame the tool.
What we're watching
Three things would change the maths.
First, hard numbers on WeatherAds.io. G2 and Capterra review volume, LinkedIn headcount trend, SimilarWeb traffic direction. Two thousand happy customers means the market is taken. Two hundred with visible churn means there may be a crack.
Second, a paying cohort for non-weather signals. Not Reddit enthusiasm; ten agencies with an invoice from a developer or consultant for FX or inventory automation who would rather pay a SaaS. Two weeks of outreach settles it.
Third, Google's roadmap. If native weather-conditional budget rules land in Smart Bidding, the category closes. If Google instead keeps pushing budget control further into black-box automation while agencies fight to reclaim manual levers, a third-party signal layer gets more interesting, not less.
That tension is the thing worth tracking.
